FAQ

How is age calculated?

The calculator compares the selected Gregorian birth date with today's date in your browser and shows complete years, months, and days.

What is a lunar birthday?

A lunar birthday is calculated by the traditional Chinese lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar. Because the two calendars are arranged differently, the same lunar birthday can map to different Gregorian dates each year.

What is the difference between a lunar birthday and a Gregorian birthday?

A Gregorian birthday is based on a fixed calendar date such as 1986-07-21. A lunar birthday is based on a Chinese lunar date such as Lunar June 15, so its matching Gregorian date usually changes each year.

What is a Ganzhi year?

A Ganzhi year is a traditional Chinese year name made from one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. There are 10 stems and 12 branches, forming 60 recurring combinations. For example, Bingyin Year combines Bing with Yin, and Yin maps to Tiger.

What is a leap month?

A leap month is an extra month in the Chinese lunar calendar used to keep the lunar year aligned with the solar year. Not every year has a leap month, and leap-month birthdays cannot be matched exactly every year.

What is nominal lunar age?

Nominal lunar age is a traditional Chinese age reference. It usually starts at 1 at birth and increases by 1 at each Chinese lunar New Year. It is different from the full-year age used in legal, medical, school, and official contexts.

Should Chinese zodiac be based on the Gregorian year or lunar year?

Traditionally, Chinese zodiac follows the Chinese lunar year. For people born near Chinese New Year, a simple Gregorian-year zodiac check can be inaccurate, so this page prioritizes the lunar conversion result.
